My name is Melony Bowling and I am originally from San Diego, California. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Science with a minor in Natural Science Education at the University of California, Merced, the first American research university built in the 21st Century. As such, their education program had a large focus on integrating technology, mathematics, and science into the curriculum and provided opportunities to teach in local classrooms. This is where my love for teaching grew as I worked with students of varying needs and backgrounds, including first generation college students, struggling students living in undesirable conditions, and many English language learners.

I completed my teaching credential with English Learner Authorization at San Diego State University. I was a part of a two semester block and completed my student teaching in the classroom full-time during the day while taking university courses at night. Although it was challenging to balance university courses while student teaching full-time, being in the classroom and having the support and feedback in tandem was invaluable.

I have taught 4th grade for the last two years at a Title I public charter school in Boyle Heights, an inner-city community near the heart of Los Angeles, California. This experience was integral in my development as an educator as I learned to quickly adapt to large classroom sizes (37) of students who were two or more grade levels behind while creatively navigating the communication barriers of a classroom of all English language learners.

From crazy hair day and after-school field trips, to clean up days and repainting the alley wall to cover graffiti, I fully integrate into my school community and embrace whatever is needed to support my school. I prioritize students’ needs and strive to be a friendly face in the hallway that is approachable to all students, parents, and families.

I am excited eager to learn what new opportunities await!
